Discovering the Algarve: Portugal's Coastal Gem

Nestled in the southernmost region of Portugal, the Algarve is a picturesque tapestry of sprawling beaches, charming towns, and delectable cuisine. Renowned for its stunning coastline, warm climate, and welcoming atmosphere, this destination is a treasure trove for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation.
WHEN TO VISIT
The Algarve is blessed with over 300 days of sunshine a year. The best time to visit is from June to September when the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for beach activities and outdoor dining. However, if you prefer a quieter experience, the shoulder seasons of April to May and October to November offer mild weather and fewer crowds.
We even took it to the next level and went there at the beginning of December and were still lucky enough to have t-shirt weather, 18 degrees Celsius and sunny.
GETTING THERE
Arriving in the Algarve is straightforward. The region is served by Faro Airport, with direct flights from various European cities. If you're coming from Lisbon, a scenic option is to rent a car and drive south. The journey takes around 2.5 to 3 hours and offers stunning coastal views along the way. We rented a car from Happy Deals , a local company, which we highly recommend.
WHERE TO STAY
Lagos is an excellent choice for accommodation. This historic town offers a mix of traditional charm and modern amenities, with a range of lodging options from luxury resorts to cozy guesthouses. Lagos is also conveniently located, making it an ideal base for exploring the Algarve.

Explore Endless Beaches and Coves
The Algarve's coastline is a tapestry of stunning beaches and hidden coves. During our three-day stay in the Algarve, we were captivated by several stunning beaches that truly stood out.
Benagil Cove
Visiting the Algarve without seeing Benagil Cove is like missing a piece of its natural heart. Famous for its awe-inspiring sea cave, access to this natural wonder is now restricted to guided boat tours, as kayaking is no longer an option.
Although disembarking inside the cave isn't possible anymore, the boat tour provides an excellent opportunity to witness the stunning dome-shaped ceiling and the enchanting interplay of light inside the cave.
For those who prefer to stay on land or who might be put off by the crowds, viewing the cove from the cliffs above offers a breathtaking perspective of this unique geological feature.
The Algarve is dotted with picturesque towns. These towns are characterised by whitewashed buildings, cobbled streets, and vibrant local markets. Spend a day exploring these towns to soak up the local culture and history. We really enjoyed Carvoeiro and Albufeira.
Enjoy the Local Cuisine
The culinary scene in the Algarve is a highlight of any visit. With its coastal location, seafood is a staple. Savor dishes like Cataplana (seafood stew) and grilled sardines, and don’t miss the region’s sweet pastries, like the delectable Pastel de Nata.
